Cellulose Fibres at the Forefront of the Race to Replace Single-use Plastics
Every year, millions of tonnes of man-made materials enter the environment. This includes - wear and tear on fibres and textiles; losses from agriculture, aquaculture and fisheries; and plastic waste in soil, rivers, lakes and oceans due to a lack of proper waste management in some markets.
Environmental biodegradability must be considered as part of the solution to a less polluted world, more about the right way to measure this and what are the applications where biodegradability makes sense, build the scientific backbone of the session.
One of the European Union's initiatives to tackle this problem is the Single Use Plastic Directive (SUPD).
This directive also covers a number of products that contain fibres and is therefore of great importance to the cellulose fibre sector. In addition, microfibres make up a significant proportion of microplastics and have been a focus of attention in recent years. How all this can create market opportunities for man-made cellulosic fibres today and in the future will be discussed by the experts and answered by the participants during the panel discussion after the session.

Cellulose Fibre Innovation of the Year 2024: Nominated Innovations Range from Resource-efficient and Recycled Fibres for Textiles and Building Panels to Geotextiles for Glacier Protection
Six award nominees present innovative and sustainable solutions for various industries in the cellulose fibre value chain. The full economic potential of the cellulose fibre industry will be introduced to a wide audience that will vote for the winners in Cologne (Germany), and online.
Year after year nova-Institute grants the “Cellulose Fibre Innovation of the Year” award in the context of the “Cellulose Fibres Conference”, that will take place in Cologne on 13 and 14 March 2024. In advance, the conferences advisory board nominated six remarkable products, including cellulose fibres from textile waste and straw, a novel technology for dying cellulose-based textiles and a construction panel as well as geotextiles. The innovations will be presented by the companies on the first day of the event. All conference participants can vote for one of the six nominees and the top three winners will be honoured with the “Cellulose Fibre Innovation of the Year” award. The Innovation award is sponsored by GIG Karasek (AT). |
