Today's Focus: Traditional and New Markets for Cellulose Fibres
The man-made cellulosic fibre (MMCF) industry has undergone a rapid transformation in response to the growing demand for more sustainable textile fibres. Over the past decade, the industry has witnessed the entry of several new players, and the current dominant players are defending their position by expanding their capacity and vertically integrating into the largest manufacturing cost of their fibres: dissolving pulp. At the same time, innovations using alternative raw materials, in particular textile waste and agricultural residues, are gaining ground, answering the call for a more circular textile economy. These and other dynamics of the cellulosic fibres market will be the subject of the first session.
The main findings of the Finnish cellulosic fibre case study presented in the first session of the conference are the role of the Finnish forest clusters in developing an innovative environment for cellulosic fibres based on the first Finnish bio-economy strategy and the lessons learned. All findings, which are transferable to other circumstances and regions, will provide a vision for the possible development of the cellulosic fibre story.
