Today's focus: "Circular Economy and Recyclability of Fibres"

By 2030, the European Commission aims to establish textile products in the EU markets that are long-lived, recyclable, and to a great extent made from recycled fibres. Among other steps to-wards a socially and environmentally sustainable circular textile sector, these efforts further require the set-up of economically profitable services for textile re-use and repair. So how exactly does the Commission plan to achieve these ambitious targets? The answer is a multi-layered and interdisciplinary approach involving all stakeholders along the textile value chain. A careful reading of the communication reveals that the Commission sets a very strong focus on increasing the recycling quota of textiles into new textile fibres. Most of these measures either require a concrete recycling quota and recyclability of textiles or expect a preferential use of recycling solutions when assessing the environmental performance of products. However, the recycling of the cellulose is associated with some hurdles. How can technology overcome these obstacles? How can markets achieve a circularity of their materials? How can the cellulose fibres industry contribute to the sustainability and circularity of the textile sector? About the Conference
With a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) between 5 and 10 %, cellulose fibres have been a success story within the textile market over the past decade. Similar growth rates are expected in the following years. This makes cellulosic fibres the fastest growing fibre group in the textile industry and therefore the largest investment sector in the global circular bio-economy.
However, the recycling of the cellulose has some hurdles. How can technology overcome these obstacles? How can markets achieve a circularity of the material? How can the cellulose fibres industry contribute to the sustainability and circularity of the textile sector?
