Innovation award “Cellulose Fibre Innovation of the Year 2023”

Cellulose fibres provide important solutions for the future and are already available today in large and growing quantities. Alternative sources for cellulose can further improve the sus-tainability of cellulose applications. To celebrate pioneers in this field, for the third time, no-va-Institute awards the “Cellulose Fibre Innovation of the Year” award in the frame of the “Cellulose Fibres Conference 2023” (8–9 March 2023). The conference advisory board nominated six remarkable products, including cellulose fibres from textile waste, banana production waste and bacterial pulp, a novel technology for producing lyocell yarns and a hygiene product. The innovations will be put to the vote of the conference audience on the first day of the event, with the awards ceremony taking place in the evening.

Session "Ionic Liquids and New Technologies for Pulps, Fibres and Yarns"

On the 9th of March the conference also includes a dedicated session on "Ionic Liquids and New Technologies for Pulps, Fibres and Yarns":

The volume of available cotton feedstock cannot keep up with the growing demand for bio-based, natural textile fibres. For this reason, the forest-based industry is actively working on developing man-made cellulosic fibers from wood as an alternative source to fossil-based textile fibers such as polyester. Superbase ionic liquids (SILs) have been developed as a safe and environmentally friendly alternative for cellulose dissolution and regeneration. Trends for dissolution capabilities of various SILs for different materials are presented as a solution that is also compatible in combination with fossil-based fibres such as nylon. In this context, pulp is the most common raw material base for the production of man-made cellulose fibers, while paper pulp from eucalyptus and coniferous wood can also be used as a raw material for spinning regenerated fibers in an ionic liquid-based process.
