New Technologies and Applications for Fibres

The search for sustainable textile solutions made from renewable resources is one of the emerging themes in many industries in Europe. Carbon fibres have found widespread applications as lightweight and strong materials, but have the disadvantage of being energy intensive to produce. Natural materials aim to reduce the environmental impact of carbon fibre production. Cellulosic fibres can be used as precursors for short carbon fibres and two different research results, including the blending of lignin with cellulose fibres, which will presented in the session introduced below.

The next session topic is cellulose aerogel fabrics. These offer innovative, lightweight materials for the fashion industry, replacing feathers and other animal-based solutions and improving the insulation of textiles, with a focus on sportswear.

The session will include information on how bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) is produced in a unique form on the surface of liquid media with advantages such as mechanical strength, free hydroxyl groups and high water content. These properties offer usability in several applications, including a leather-like bio-material derived from bacterial nanocellulose in vehicle interiors.
