Technologies for Pulps, Fibres and Yarns

As the textile industry increasingly prioritises sustainability as part of business as usual, the demand for bio-based and recycled raw materials has increased.

The session will start with pulping strategies for the production of high performance recycled Lyocell-type fibres. The use of waste and side streams as substrate for man-made cellulosic fibres has received increasing attention in recent years. Besides cellulose and other natural polymers, these alternative substrates often contain contaminants such as synthetic polymers, dyes, coatings or other additives.

The amount of additives or impurities is often small, but can have a significant impact on the process and product quality. Refining strategies must be implemented to enable fibre production using Lyocell-type spinning processes.

The second presentation of the session will provide an overview of the latest developments, focusing on the properties of the cellulose produced by Lixea and its applicability in MMCF production. The Lixea technology has the potential to revolutionise the industry by opening up vast quantities of previously unavailable feedstock sources.

The development and up-scaling of new technologies required to process these new materials presents unique challenges, including variability in material properties, environmental impact and scalability. The session will present a modular platform approach as a solution, enabling flexible, efficient and scalable development of spinning technologies tailored to the diverse range of bio-based and recycled materials.

Cellulose, a highly versatile and abundant biopolymer, has traditionally been derived from plants, often using large amounts of fresh water and synthetic chemicals. In response to these environmental challenges, the final presentation of the session explores sustainable alternatives for cellulose production by using seawater as an innovative medium for bacterial cellulose production.
